Medical Directors

Doris C. Gundersen, MD

Dr. Gundersen serves as the Medical Director of the Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP) as of July 1, 2009. She has served as an Associate Medical Director from 2000 to 2009. She provides oversight of assessment, referral and monitoring functions to physicians with health concerns. Dr. Gundersen received her medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She completed subspecialty training in general psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver, where she currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Gundersen received added qualifications in forensic psychiatry through the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.

Dr. Gundersen currently serves as Associate Medical Director of the Colorado Physician Health Program. She maintains a private practice in Denver, Colorado, specializing in women’s health. Dr. Gundersen’s forensic interests include threat assessment. She provides consultation to a number of employers in Colorado and nationally regarding workplace violence prevention. She is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, past president of the Colorado Psychiatric Society and an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Gundersen is also a member of the Colorado Medical Society and Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Michael H. Gendel, MD

Dr. Gendel serves as the Medical Director Emeritus of the Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP) as of July 1, 2009. Dr. Gendel served as Medical Director from 1999 to 2009, and served as Associate Medical Director between 1989 and 1999. He provides oversight of assessment, referral and monitoring functions to physicians with health concerns. In addition, Dr. Gendel is the past president of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP). He has authored several articles on physician stress and physician health and illness and been an active speaker on these subjects throughout Colorado, nationally and internationally. He has chaired the Physician Health Research Planning Group, a national work group that promotes physician health research which is now a task force of the FSPHP.

Dr. Gendel received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Brandeis University, his medical degree from the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine, and completed a Special Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the University of Kansas. Dr. Gendel trained in psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) were he holds an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. Dr. Gendel has been an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) since 1990 and was a member of the committee of the ABPN that writes the addiction subspecialty examination. He also serves on the PRITE Editorial Board. He is a past president of the Colorado Psychiatric Society, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a founding member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, of which he is currently Immediate Past-president. Dr. Gendel has served as a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Grievance Committee and of the Appellate Discipline Commission (for attorneys). He also maintains a private practice, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of professionals.

Scott Humphreys, MD

Dr. Humphreys received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. He went on to train in General Psychiatry at John Hopkins Hospital where he served as chief resident. He came to Denver to train in Forensic Psychiatry through the University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Humphreys oversees the psychiatric consultation services at Presbyterian St. Lukes and Rose Hospitals. He is an attending physician on the Geriatric Psychiatry unit of the Medical Center of Aurora. He continues to be affiliated with the Forensic Psychiatry training program. Dr. Humphreys’ primary emphasis in his Forensic Psychiatric practice is sex offender evaluation, management, and treatment. In addition, he cares for general psychiatric outpatients in his private practice.

Dr. Humphreys sees it as a privilege and a great responsibility to work with the physicians in this state during some of their most trying times to help insure their health and, subsequently, the health of their patients.

Jay H. Shore, MD MPH

Dr. Shore joined Colorado Physician Health Program as an Associate Medical Director in July 2004. He received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Macalester College and his medical and public health degrees (MD, MPH) from Tulane University School of Medicine and Public Health. He completed an internship in psychiatry at State University of New York at Buffalo and received his general training in psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver, where he currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Shore is a past Fulbright Fellow, received the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry Resident Research Award, selected as a Laughlin Fellow to the American College of Psychiatrists, and served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Shore has a long-standing interest in addiction and the health issues of indigenous peoples. His current work involves directing several Teleheatlh projects. These activities include ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of Telehealth programs in rural communities aimed at improving both quality, and access to care. Dr. Shore provides ongoing clinical care via Telehealth to patients in western communities, with an emphasis on treating substance abuse and posttraumatic stress disorder. He also has been involved in several research projects examining the impact of alcohol use on physical health.

Elizabeth "Libby" B. Stuyt, MD

Dr. Stuyt joined the Colorado Physician Health Program in 2004 as the Associate Medical Director for the Southern Region. She graduated from medical school at Texas Tech University HSC in Lubbock, Texas in 1986. After completing psychiatry residency training at Texas Tech University HSC in 1990 she continued on faculty there as the medical director for the substance abuse treatment services as well as the psychiatry residency-training director. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.

Dr. Stuyt, originally born in Denver, moved back to Colorado in 1999 and is currently the medical director for the Circle Program, a 90-day inpatient dual-diagnosis treatment program at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo. She is a senior instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado HSC and enjoys teaching medical students. She is active in research and is very interested in the effect of all addictive drugs, including nicotine, on the addiction process, treatment and recovery.

Dr. Stuyt was a member of the Texas Medical Association state committee on Physician Health and Rehabilitation for ten years working with physicians in areas of education, intervention and monitoring. She is very impressed with the CPHP organization, the quality of the staff and services offered and the fact that it is funded in part by the physicians themselves through licensing fees.

Mary Ellen Caiati, MD

Dr. Caiati attended the University of Notre Dame, after which she worked for several years with emotionally disturbed children in the Seattle area. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Washington, she completed her residency in Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Caiati has provided clinical service in a variety of settings, including the University of Denver Student Health Center, the Infectious Disease Clinic at Denver Health, the Boulder Mental Health Center and, since 2000, in private practice in central Denver. She is board certified in psychiatry and has completed the Psychotherapy Training Program at the Psychoanalytic Institute, Denver. Dr. Caiati has served as Associate Medical Director at the Colorado Physicians Health Program since 2004.

Staff

Sarah R. Early, Psy.D.

Dr. Early is originally from Rochester, New York.  She received her Bachelors degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1993.  Her masters degree in Clinical Psychology was completed in 1996 and her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology was completed in 1999.  Dr. Early’s graduate work was conducted at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.

Prior to coming to CPHP as Executive Director on July 1, 2002, Dr. Early practiced as a generalist psychologist providing clinical services to a variety of clientele including healthcare professionals at Sullivan County Office of Hamilton Center (a behavioral healthcare system serving western central Indiana).  In addition to direct care, Dr. Early’s responsibilities also included administrative oversight.  She is a member of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs, American Psychological Association, Employee Assistance Professionals Associations, and the Society of Psychologist in Management.
